Two Day Primary Certificate Practicum in Rational Emotive Behavior Training
In this intense two-day practicum, participants will learn the Rational Emotive Behavior Theory of emotional disturbance and change by two of the leading REBT practitioners, Terry London and Dr. Michael Shear, PSY.D. Strategies for identifying and challenging clients’ dysfunctional beliefs and constructing more adaptive beliefs, emotions and behavior will be a prime focus of the weekend. REBT’s conceptualization of emotions and reducing some of the common errors that new REBT therapists make will also be covered. Participants will have the opportunity to practice their REBT skills in small group supervision and receive immediate feedback from one or both of the most experienced, certified REBT supervisors available.
During the 2-day Primary Practicum, participants will learn to:
- Understand and apply the REBT theory of emotional disturbance and change.
- Apply the ABC model to a wide range of clinical issues.
- Identify and restructure clients’ dysfunctional beliefs.
- Construct and teach clients how to have new adaptive thoughts, emotions and behaviors.
Develop and apply homework protocols for common presenting problems.
Terry London, MS is a Co-Director of the Chicago Institute for Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). He is considered a pioneer in the development of the educational approach based on REBT known as Rational-Emotive Behavior Education (REBE). He is the author of eight books on the topic of REBT/REBE written both for professionals and non-professionals. He is also a licensed REBT practitioner and clinical supervisor through the Albert Ellis Institute located in New York City. Mr. London has been teaching graduate courses and presenting workshops in REBT and REBE for the past three decades.
Dr. Michael Shear, PSY.D. is also a Co-Director of the Chicago Institute for Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and has been a counselor and instructor of REBT/REBE for 20+ years. He is also a licensed REBT practitioner and clinical supervisor through the Albert Ellis Institute located in New York City. Dr. Shear has spent his professional life to this point demonstrating that work and practice is the key to learning how to take care of our emotional well-being using the principles of REBT, assisting his audiences in becoming ever more able to take care of themselves by realizing that events do not upset us; rather; we upset ourselves by the views we choose to take of events.
Open to basically any interested party, with or without relevant qualifications. However, the event will cater to psychologists, counselors, social workers, physicians, nurses, graduate students, and SMART Facilitators. Minimum qualification for certificate candidacy is a master’s degree in psychology or counseling, M.S.W., M.D., or R.N. Other helping professionals or non-professionals (e.g., alcoholism counselors) are eligible to participate in the full Practicum but will receive a Paraprofessional Certificate. From Eastbound 290 you'll take exit 27A (Westbound is 27B) and find your way north on Sacramento to West Lake Street which both exits directly plough into about a half a mile north of either. You'll be turning right onto West Lake Street.
Street parking is in plentiful supply as is good humor when you arrive.
Public Transportation: We are two three blocks west of the California Greenline stop and two LONG blocks east of the Garfield (Kedzie) stop. We recommend California stop.
From the burbs, you'll want to take whatever Metrarail Train that will get you to Ogilvie (www.metrarail.com) and then walk out of the west side of the building and up two blocks to the Clinton Station of the Greenline.
